Chapter 13 — The Duel in London
On a damp November evening in 1965, in the lecture theatre of Bedford College, University of London, the atmosphere was more gladiatorial than scholarly. The seats were packed — not only with students of philosophy, history, and science, but also with journalists, visiting academics, and the kind of countercultural intellectual hangers-on who thrived on anything that smelled like “establishment under siege.”
The event had been billed as a high-minded academic colloquium, a polite exchange between two eminent thinkers: Sir Karl Popper, already a titan of 20th-century philosophy of science, and Thomas S. Kuhn, the American historian and philosopher of science whose 1962 book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, had become an unexpected sensation in academic circles. But the mood in the hall betrayed something less genteel. You could feel it: this was to be a contest, and the crowd wanted a winner.
Popper, trim, sharp-eyed, in a dark suit, had spent decades defending the idea that science was defined by its method — conjecture and refutation — a relentless, logical process that drew its strength from openness to criticism and a refusal to settle into dogma. Kuhn, younger, less formal in bearing but no less confident, had published a work that seemed to many to overturn this image. For Kuhn, science was not a steady march toward truth but a series of “normal science” periods — puzzle-solving within rigid paradigms — interrupted by revolutionary upheavals that replaced one paradigm with another.
It was a neat story. Too neat. Kuhn’s language — “puzzle-solving,” “incommensurability,” “paradigm” — had proved intoxicating to those in the humanities who had long resented science’s prestige. With a few conceptual strokes, he had reframed the laboratory not as a cathedral of reason but as a workshop of craftsmen bound by tradition, peer pressure, and the politics of their guild. And the audience that night in London was not neutral: they had come, many of them, to see this young American physicist-turned-historian topple the knighted philosopher who still spoke of science as the best hope for rational progress.
The exchange that followed has been dissected in memoirs, articles, and the oral histories of those present. Popper pressed Kuhn on whether his talk of “incommensurable” paradigms did not, in fact, commit him to an unacceptable relativism — the idea that there was no rational way to judge one scientific worldview as better than another. Kuhn parried, insisting that he was merely describing the historical process, not endorsing epistemic free-for-all. But the subtleties of his distinctions were largely lost on the crowd, which cheered his digs at the idea of an eternal, context-free “scientific method.”
By the evening’s end, many in the audience — especially the students — declared Kuhn the victor. Popper was seen as representing the “old guard,” stubbornly clinging to a vision of science that ignored the messy realities of history and sociology. Kuhn, in contrast, seemed to them the realist, the radical, the breaker of idols. That Kuhn’s account left room for — and perhaps even invited — the very relativism he claimed to reject was beside the point. In the eyes of those hungry for a new way to challenge scientific authority, Structure had given them a vocabulary and a hero.
From this moment, the die was cast. Kuhn’s prestige in the humanities rose meteorically, while many working scientists barely noticed the debate. They had labs to run, experiments to complete. For them, Structure was an interesting if eccentric contribution to the history of science, not a manifesto. But in the lecture halls of philosophy, sociology, and literary theory, it was read as just that — a philosophical sledgehammer against the pretensions of science.
Looking back, it’s hard to overstate the symbolic significance of that evening. It was less about who was right on the finer points of epistemology, and more about the cultural moment: the mid-1960s, with its anti-establishment energy, its suspicion of authority, its hunger for intellectual insurgency. The sciences, flush with Cold War funding, the space race, and Nobel glamour, had seemed untouchable for decades. Now here was a trained physicist telling the world that scientific revolutions were not triumphs of pure reason but political and sociological reconfigurations.
The crowd lapped it up.
In that theatre, on that night, the long-simmering resentments of the humanities toward the sciences found their champion. And from there, the idea that scientific knowledge was historically contingent, socially constructed, and not necessarily converging on truth would spread far beyond academic philosophy — into cultural studies, political rhetoric, and eventually, into the very marrow of public discourse.
This chapter is certainly in the wrong place.
ReplyDeleteThis bit of prose describes the scene of a famous debate between Sir Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn, and in Kuhnian folklore it heralds Kuhn's emergence as an undergraduate hero for hippies - the same hippies who grew to run the world, or at least the universities.
It is a little dramatically framed, but it *was* socially significant even if not academically so.
it represents a shift in the focus of philosophy of science - a shift in focus *from* what the best of scientists think in the best of circumstances to produce the best science *to* consideration more of what ordinary scientists do ordinarily under ordinary circumstances.
Quite curious, isn't it, that such a shift would occur?
Imagine philosophy itself doing the same.
Imagine philosophy itself throwing out Kant and Russell, and instead dwelling on the writings of nondescript average suburban philosophy lecturers, and calling it "normal philosophy".
