Chapter 18 — The Road to the Science Wars
By the late 1970s, the post-Kuhnian reimagining of science was not just an academic undercurrent — it was the water in which much of the humanities was now swimming. The shift was subtle at first: fewer students in sociology, philosophy, or cultural studies were being taught the language of objective inquiry, and more were being taught the language of discourse, narrative, and power.
The Postmodern Cross-Pollination
This was the era when French theory washed ashore on English-speaking campuses. Derrida, Foucault, Barthes, Baudrillard — their works arrived in translation just as the appetite for Kuhn’s “paradigm shifts” was peaking. The synthesis was electric and dangerous: Kuhn’s historical relativism blended with the postmodern suspicion of “grand narratives” to create an all-purpose solvent for claims of universal truth.
If Structure had initially been a Trojan Horse — smuggling a cautious historian’s arguments into the humanities — postmodernism was the siege engine that burst the gates wide open. Science was no longer just another human activity subject to sociological analysis; it was a text, a performance, a rhetoric, and perhaps a form of cultural imperialism.
From Theory to Activism
In the hands of politically energised academics, these ideas became weapons. If science was culturally bound, then Western science was a colonial project. If “truth” was paradigm-relative, then marginalised groups had every right to insist on their own epistemologies — feminist science, indigenous science, Afrocentric science — each claiming equal validity.
A physicist might protest that the speed of light or the structure of DNA is not negotiable, but in the reimagined epistemic landscape, such protests could themselves be cast as assertions of privilege and dominance. The scientific method became just one more “way of knowing,” no more inherently trustworthy than myth, story, or ritual.
The Slow Erosion of Authority
Through the 1980s, the erosion of science’s epistemic authority was steady and mostly unchallenged within the humanities. Departments of cultural studies grew rapidly, absorbing literature, anthropology, and sociology into an interdisciplinary web. A new canon emerged, one in which Latour’s Laboratory Life and Haraway’s Situated Knowledges sat alongside Foucault’s The Order of Things. These works didn’t merely analyse science — they dismantled it, piece by piece, as a privileged source of truth.
It was in this climate that the phrase “epistemological relativism” gained its teeth. It was no longer an abstract philosophical position; it was an operating principle. Science was de-centred, stripped of its Enlightenment aura, and placed on the same shelf as astrology or creation myths — all “valid” within their cultural frameworks.
Flashpoints and Fissures
By the early 1990s, tensions were ripening into what would later be called the Science Wars. A few high-profile skirmishes stand out:
1. The Sokal Hoax (1996) — Physicist Alan Sokal submitted a parody article to Social Text, laced with absurdities, and watched as it was published without peer review. His point was simple: in some humanities circles, the mere echo of fashionable theory was valued over coherence, evidence, or truth.
2. Gross & Levitt’s Higher Superstition (1994) — Two scientists fired back at what they saw as the creeping irrationalism of postmodern academic culture. Their thesis: under the banner of social justice and critical theory, many academics had abandoned the very idea of objective reality.
3. The “Strong Programme” in Science Studies — Originating in Edinburgh, this movement insisted on explaining both “true” and “false” scientific beliefs using the same sociological tools. While intellectually provocative, it blurred the lines between discovering truths about nature and constructing socially useful fictions.
Each of these flashpoints revealed a deep fissure: scientists continued to see themselves as engaged in a truth-seeking enterprise, while many in the humanities saw science as merely another domain of cultural production — one whose prestige needed to be deconstructed.
The Kuhnian Legacy, Distorted but Durable
Kuhn himself expressed discomfort with some of these developments, insisting that he was not a relativist and that his work had been misread. But by then, it no longer mattered. The idea of Kuhn — the Kuhn who supposedly proved that science was just politics by another name — had taken on a life of its own.
This is where the tragedy lies. A subtle historical thesis was transmuted into a blunt ideological weapon. The humanities had not merely “run with” Kuhn; they had reshaped him into a patron saint for an epistemology that dissolves all distinction between hard evidence and cultural preference.
Preparing for Open Conflict
By the time the Science Wars erupted in the mid-1990s, the battle lines were clear. On one side were scientists and their allies, defending the special status of empirical inquiry. On the other were large swaths of the humanities, buoyed by decades of Kuhn-inflected theory, asserting that science was neither special nor especially trustworthy.
The clash was inevitable. But its seeds were sown in the years immediately after Structure — when the book was first embraced, misinterpreted, and weaponised for purposes far beyond Kuhn’s own intent.

This chapter brings our book about Kuhn into a contemporary relevance, and if it wasn't for the subject matter of this chapter my concerns about Kuhn would be just so much fuddy-duddying.
