Chapter 19 — The Science Wars Explode
By the mid-1990s, the simmering tension between the sciences and the humanities boiled over into open confrontation. The polite veneer of “interdisciplinary dialogue” was stripped away; what remained was an unmistakable cultural struggle over the very meaning of knowledge.
The Long Fuse Ignites
The Science Wars did not appear overnight. They were the culmination of decades of post-Kuhnian reinterpretations, postmodern suspicion, and sociological critiques. By this point, many humanities scholars no longer felt obliged to pay even lip service to the idea that science was uniquely capable of delivering objective truths. Instead, it was treated as one power discourse among many, no more “true” than religious myth or cultural lore — merely more effective at projecting its authority.
From the scientist’s point of view, this was outrageous. The scientific method — hypothesis, experimentation, falsifiability, replication — was not a “local custom” but a universal toolkit for finding out what is actually the case about the natural world. To have this demoted to “Western epistemology” felt like vandalism.
The Sokal Detonation
The flashpoint was Alan Sokal’s now-legendary 1996 hoax. Sokal, a physicist at NYU, submitted an article to the cultural-studies journal Social Text. The piece was titled “Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity”. It was laced with pseudo-scientific jargon, flattering references to fashionable theorists, and a central thesis so absurd it should have been a red flag: that quantum gravity has progressive political implications.
The journal published it. No peer review. No fact-checking. In Sokal’s own words, he wanted to see “whether a leading North American journal of cultural studies would publish an article liberally salted with nonsense, if (a) it sounded good and (b) it flattered the editors’ ideological preconceptions.”
It did. And when Sokal revealed the hoax in Lingua Franca, the fallout was immediate. To the scientific community, this was proof that certain humanities sectors had abandoned rational standards altogether. To many humanities academics, it was a betrayal — an act of bad faith from an outsider who had “infiltrated” their discourse.
Counter-Attacks: Higher Superstition and Beyond
But Sokal’s prank wasn’t the first shot. Two years earlier, biologist Paul Gross and mathematician Norman Levitt had published Higher Superstition: The Academic Left and Its Quarrels with Science. It was a sustained broadside against what they saw as an anti-scientific drift in the humanities and social sciences — a drift fuelled by Kuhnian misreadings, postmodern scepticism, and political agendas that put ideology above evidence.
Gross and Levitt’s message was uncompromising: these anti-science tendencies were not harmless academic games, but corrosive to public understanding, education, and policy.
Their critics dismissed the book as alarmist and condescending. Yet its existence signalled that scientists were no longer content to absorb the blows silently. The Science Wars were not going to be fought only in seminar rooms; they were going to be fought in print, on conference stages, and in the court of public opinion.
Relativism at Full Strength
What the Sokal Affair and Higher Superstition exposed was the operational dominance of epistemological relativism in parts of the humanities. The central tenet — that truth claims are inextricable from the social, political, and cultural contexts in which they arise — was no longer a debated theory. It was axiomatic.
And here is where Kuhn’s ghost haunted the battlefield. Many of the humanities scholars defending relativism explicitly cited Structure of Scientific Revolutions as proof that science does not advance toward truth but lurches between incommensurable paradigms. Kuhn himself protested that his work had been distorted, but his protests landed softly; the caricature of Kuhn as the anti-objectivity prophet was simply too useful to relinquish.
The Battlefield Widens: Public Policy and Education
The consequences were not confined to academic turf wars. In education policy, arguments emerged for “teaching the controversy” — whether about evolution, climate science, or even vaccination. In each case, the relativist frame allowed politically or religiously motivated positions to claim equal standing with empirical consensus.
The scientific establishment viewed this with alarm. If empirical evidence could be relativised into just another opinion, then public decision-making would be guided by lobbying and belief rather than data and reason.
The Climactic Exchanges
The late 1990s saw a series of public debates, sometimes resembling philosophical colloquia, sometimes verbal brawls. Physicist Steven Weinberg warned that the postmodern undermining of science was “not only false but dangerous.” Historian of science Bruno Latour — once celebrated in the relativist camp — began to express doubts about where radical social constructivism was leading, especially in an era of climate denial and conspiracy theories.
By the turn of the millennium, the Science Wars had lost some of their heat, but not their relevance. The relativist currents remained embedded in cultural studies, postcolonial theory, and certain strands of sociology. And science — while outwardly triumphant in technology and discovery — had suffered an erosion of public authority from which it has not fully recovered.
The Kuhn Connection
In retrospect, Structure of Scientific Revolutions was not the sole cause of the Science Wars — but it was a crucial accelerant. By offering a vocabulary in which science could be redescribed as “puzzle-solving within paradigms” and paradigm shifts as acts of conversion rather than reasoned consensus, Kuhn unintentionally armed those who sought to dethrone science from its Enlightenment pedestal.
And here lies the polemical heart of the matter: whatever Kuhn’s private disclaimers, the political utility of his book to the anti-science faction was immense. In the humanities’ long campaign to relativise knowledge, Structure became both sword and shield.
