Chapter 20 — Aftermath and Entrenchment
The public skirmishes of the Science Wars in the 1990s may have subsided, but their aftershocks reverberated through the first decades of the 21st century. The surface temperature cooled, yet the tectonic plates beneath the academic landscape had shifted. The intellectual currents unleashed by the humanities’ long anti-science turn — catalyzed, armed, and legitimised by The Structure of Scientific Revolutions — continued to flow, carving channels deep into cultural and institutional life.
The Quiet Victory of Relativism
In formal terms, the scientists “won” the Science Wars. Physics departments were not abolished. Chemistry retained its laboratories. NASA did not hire Derridean deconstructionists to plan Mars missions. But in the humanities, a quieter and more consequential victory belonged to the relativists.
Curricula in literary studies, cultural anthropology, and critical theory retained their postmodern suspicion of universal truths. Graduate seminars in “Science and Technology Studies” continued to assign Kuhn, Latour, and Feyerabend as canonical texts. The message — that scientific knowledge is socially constructed, contingent, and politically entangled — became an unexamined premise rather than a debated claim.

From Seminar Room to Policy Arena
The most striking long-term effect was not in academia alone but in the seepage of relativist thinking into the broader political and policy arena. Once the notion that “all knowledge is local” became culturally acceptable, it could be — and was — weaponised by actors far from the ivory tower.
Climate change denialists borrowed the language of epistemic pluralism to insist that their “alternative data” deserved equal footing with peer-reviewed climate science. Anti-vaccine activists invoked “competing paradigms” to justify fringe biomedical claims. In this way, the relativist toolkit designed to challenge the political authority of science in the humanities migrated into the hands of those who wished to challenge its empirical authority in public life.
The Persistence of Kuhn’s Shadow
Even when Kuhn’s name was absent, the structure of the argument was recognisable. Science was presented not as a method converging on truth but as a self-referential game played by an insular elite. Paradigm shifts, rather than being rare and revolutionary events, were depicted as routine — or worse, as evidence that all scientific claims were provisional to the point of meaninglessness.
This outlook was not universal, but it became a reflex in certain intellectual circles. The scientist’s claim to “know” was met with a knowing smile: Ah, but whose knowledge is it? Whose paradigm?
The Humanities Entrenchment
Inside the humanities, this posture solidified. Whole subfields were predicated on the assumption that scientific authority was merely another rhetorical construction. The historian of science no longer sought to trace the arc of discovery but to unpick the power relations embedded in laboratory life. The philosopher of science often took as given that theories are underdetermined by data and that consensus is a function of social negotiation, not empirical adequacy.
For many scholars, this was simply the new normal — the intellectual inheritance of the late 20th century, taken as settled fact. The generation that had fought the Science Wars retired; their students, steeped in relativist premises, now chaired departments.
Science Strikes Back — Quietly
Scientists did respond, but often in the quieter registers of outreach and education. Popular science books — by writers like Richard Dawkins, Steven Pinker, Brian Greene, and Lisa Randall — aimed to reassert the beauty, power, and objectivity of science for a lay audience. They presented science not as a colonial imposition of Western thought, but as a genuinely universal endeavour, accessible to and enriched by all cultures.
Yet in many cases these works were read within the already sympathetic. The deeper cultural seepage of relativist thinking proved more resistant to reversal.
The Cost to Public Discourse
By the 2010s, the long tail of the Science Wars was visible in the form of epistemic fragmentation. In the digital age, relativist habits of thought converged with the algorithmic amplification of opinion bubbles. The old postmodern jest — “There is no truth, only interpretation” — became the unspoken operating principle of entire online ecosystems.
Science was not dethroned in the laboratory; it was sidelined in the public square.
Kuhn’s Involuntary Bequest
And so we arrive at the irony. Kuhn did not set out to demolish science. He was a physicist by training, a historian of science by vocation. His target was not objectivity itself but a certain Whiggish caricature of science as a straight-line march toward truth. Yet Structure, once loosed into the academic bloodstream, mutated. It provided the conceptual grammar by which generations of humanities scholars could articulate their suspicion — even their hostility — toward science’s epistemic privilege.
Whether Kuhn protested misinterpretation is beside the point. The uptake mattered more than the author’s intent. In the ecology of ideas, what survives is not what is truest, but what is most useful to the inheritors. And to the anti-science factions of the late 20th century, Structure was very useful indeed.
Where We All Went Wrong
Here, then, is the through-line for the polemic we propose: the transition from healthy critique to corrosive suspicion was not inevitable. It was a choice, nurtured by a certain strand of humanities thinking, and supercharged by a book whose subtlety was discarded in favour of its most incendiary implications.
From 1962 to the present, the anti-science habit has shaped curricula, seeped into policy debates, and altered the default posture of educated discourse toward empirical claims. The consequence is not merely academic; it is cultural, political, and civilisational.

ReplyDeleteI have a placeholder in there: PoS course versus Schopenhauer, which is to remind me about a possible addition to the narrative.
As many will know I completed last year a 10 week online course in Philosophy of Science ("PoS") hosted by Oxford University, and I must admit that throughout that course rather than gobbling up everything fed to me I was passing the material through a colander looking for grubs and rocks.
I was quite sensitive to their use of rhetorical devices and logical fallacies, of which there were many, as they propounded the party line that, in every week, in every way, science is doubtable.
The material was so questionable that it occurred to me I could write something of a critique analysing that didactic material through the lens of Schopenhauer's work "The Art of Always Being Right: 38 Ways to Win an Argument" which is an entertaining and useful treatise on debate rhetoric. So, for instance, I could look at PoS statement X and reply "X deceives via Schopenhauer's tactics numbers 5, 12, and 17".
But I digress.
