Notwithstanding all the foregoing criticisms of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, let us pause for a moment and look at Kuhn from another angle. Let us indulge him, allow his descriptions, take his categories seriously for the sake of argument, and then turn them back upon him. For if his thesis is to be taken at face value, the obvious question arises: to what extent is Kuhn describing science at all?

The answer, I think, is devastating. One does not need to stray very far outside Kuhn’s narrow box to observe that every one of his observations, paradoxes, categories, and dichotomies apply not merely to science, but to all human erudition, at whatever level. He presents his book as a revolutionary insight into the distinct structure of scientific progress. But nothing he says is unique to science. His book might more accurately have been titled The Structure of Human Thought Revolutions.

This is Kuhn’s sixth and in many ways most ironic sin: the sin of false specificity. His entire framework, designed to demarcate and diagnose the growth of science, is in fact parasitic upon general features of human intellectual life. There is not one of his anecdotes, speculations, or inferences that does not apply equally, or more so, to philosophy, to history, to theology, to literature, to the arts — in short, to any field in which human beings think, write, and argue. The whole edifice of SSR collapses into banality once this is recognized.


Philosophy as Pre-Paradigmatic

Consider philosophy. Kuhn claimed that the distinguishing mark of a mature science is the establishment of a paradigm, a consensual framework within which normal science can proceed. Pre-paradigmatic fields, he argued, are characterised by endless debate, competing schools, lack of consensus. Very well: what then is philosophy if not eternally pre-paradigmatic?

From Plato’s Academy to Kant’s Königsberg, from Descartes’ cogito to Derrida’s différance, philosophy has never achieved consensus on anything like a scientific paradigm. Schools come and go; sceptics confront rationalists, empiricists, idealists, phenomenologists. The subject remains perpetually fractured. By Kuhn’s own criteria, philosophy has never been, and cannot be, a science. It lives in the very condition he regards as science’s primitive infancy.

And yet, postmodern philosophers have taken Kuhn as their champion. They have used his relativist language of paradigms and incommensurability to attack the epistemic authority of the natural sciences. The irony is glaring: those inhabiting an eternally pre-paradigmatic domain accuse the paradigmatic sciences of weakness, because Kuhn handed them a vocabulary with which to do so. Pot, kettle, glass houses, stones.


The Log and the Mote

One is reminded of the biblical injunction: why beholdest thou the mote in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam in thine own? Kuhn’s disciples in the humanities gleefully pointed to the mote in science — the supposed paradigm-dependence of all knowledge — while ignoring the log in their own. By Kuhn’s own account, philosophy’s epistemological underpinnings are far more fragile than those of physics or chemistry.

Kuhn writes extensively of the Copernican revolution as his first “scientific revolution” … but Copernicus would never have called it that. The word, even the concept, of “science” as we use it today did not emerge until *centuries* later. To avoid his dreaded Whiggishness Kuhn ought to have referred to Copernicus as a “natural philosopher” – and ought to have rightly labelled his book “The Structure of Philosophic Revolutions”.

For philosophy is largely data-free and evidence-free. It lives, depending on the school, on dialectical ingenuity, on conceptual distinctions, on rhetorical flair. There are no laboratories, no microscopes, no particle accelerators. Its paradigms (if the word may be stretched) are erected on air. Yet philosophers seized upon Kuhn to mock the sciences as epistemologically insecure. The irony borders on the absurd.

And it gets worse.

I recently completed a short on-line course on Philosophy of Science hosted at a major British university. 

The question arose: “give an example of a pseudoscience and discuss”.

Of course, most students went on to discuss “the usual suspects” … astrology, homeopathy, Marxism … but I ventured to discuss *Philosophy of Science itself* as a pseudoscience.

For as a pursuit of Truth, it carries all the hallmarks: lots of rhetoric, many different opinions, non-falsifiable, hopelessly underdetermined, hopelessly subject to inductive over-extrapolations, all the while propounding itself as a source of Truth *even if* that Truth is “there is no Truth”.

But I was duly informed by my tutor that no matter how unscientific, and frankly misleading and false, might be the form and content of Philosophy of Science, it doesn’t matter *because PoS does not purport to be a Science”. 

Let that sink in.

While subjecting the sciences to the most rigourous and disproportionate-to-irrational criticism, such that we cannot even claim to know, scientifically, the sun will rise tomorrow, notwithstandingly the Humanities give themselves a *free pass* to persist in wrongness *because they do not claim to be scientific*.


History and the Arts

The same applies to history. Kuhn noted that scientific revolutions involve reinterpretations of the past. After Copernicus, earlier astronomers were recast as precursors or obstacles depending on their alignment with the new paradigm. But does this not describe history itself? Each new generation of historians reconceptualises the past in light of new concerns. Marxists see class struggle everywhere; post-colonialists see empire; feminists see patriarchy; revisionists rehabilitate what progressives condemn. History is perpetually rewritten, its paradigms shifting with fashion.

Or consider literature. The canon itself is a series of paradigm shifts. Homer was once the Bible of European education; then Shakespeare; then the modernists; now the canon is dismantled in the name of diversity. Critical theories rise and fall — structuralism, post-structuralism, deconstruction, new historicism. Each represents not so much progress as oscillation. Is this not exactly what Kuhn described, only without microscopes or equations?

And in the arts more broadly, every avant-garde movement proclaims a revolution: Impressionism against academic painting, Dada against Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism against Dada. Each is hailed as a rupture, a break with tradition, a paradigm shift. Kuhn’s schema maps perfectly onto these domains — in fact, it fits them better than it fits science.


The Embarrassment of Applicability

Here lies the core of the Sixth Sin: Kuhn’s schema is too general to be distinctive of science. It applies everywhere, which means it explains nothing. It collapses into a universal theory of intellectual change, but one so broad as to be vacuous. To say that “sometimes thought advances incrementally, sometimes in larger leaps, and each new leap reinterprets the past” is true not only of science but of every human activity from chess to cookery.

By pretending that this was a unique structure of scientific revolutions, Kuhn misled generations. His work gave rise to a cottage industry of “Science Studies” in which historians, sociologists, and literary theorists treated science as just another discourse, no different from art or myth. They were not wrong, given Kuhn’s framework — but that is precisely the problem. Science was stripped of its specificity, its empirical anchor, its claim to truth.


The Attack on Science from Within the Humanities

In the 1970s and 80s this became an intellectual fashion. Postmodern critics gleefully announced that science was “just another narrative,” that paradigms shifted not because of evidence but because of social power, politics, rhetoric. The “science wars” of the 1990s pitted scientists against sociologists and literary theorists who claimed that physics was no more objective than poetry. Kuhn himself protested that he had been misunderstood. But the ammunition was his.

And what is the irony? That the very disciplines making these attacks were themselves far more paradigm-dependent, far more rhetorical, far more subject to fashion and whim than the sciences they attacked. Philosophy, history, literary theory — these fields are the very embodiment of Kuhn’s pre-paradigmatic chaos. Their revolutions are not grounded in experiment but in jargon and fashion. To watch them deride science for paradigm-dependence is to watch the blind mocking the sighted for myopia.


Kuhn’s Own Paradigm Problem

Even Kuhn’s own discipline, philosophy of science, demonstrates the point. He claimed that philosophy of science before him was locked in sterile debates over logical positivism versus its critics. His own work was supposed to be a paradigm shift. And indeed, it was hailed as such. But what happened next? The “Kuhnian paradigm” fractured into competing schools: realists, constructivists, relativists, empiricists, Lakatosians, Feyerabends, Latourians. Philosophy of science became — like all philosophy — a Babel of voices. Kuhn’s theory applied as much to himself as to anyone.

This is the deepest irony: SSR is itself a paradigm, subject to precisely the dynamics it claims to diagnose. It was revolutionary in the 1960s, normalised in the 1970s, attacked and revised in the 1980s, dethroned in the 1990s. If his theory explains anything, it explains itself.


The Universality That Empties

Thus the Sixth Sin: Kuhn’s theory is too universal. It does not demarcate science from non-science; it collapses them together. What is presented as an account of science is in fact an account of intellectual life as such. And as such, it tells us nothing distinctive about science’s epistemic authority.

To the extent that SSR undermines science, it undermines philosophy and the humanities even more. For the frailties Kuhn imputes to science — paradigm-dependence, theory-ladenness of observation, the social conditioning of consensus — are present in philosophy and the humanities to a far greater degree. If these constitute an epistemic crisis, the crisis is terminal for the humanities long before it touches science.


A More Honest Reckoning

What then would a more honest reckoning look like? It would acknowledge that all human thought shares certain structural features: schools of thought, debates, shifts, reinterpretations of the past. But it would also insist on the crucial differences. Science is distinguished not by being exempt from these dynamics, but by being tethered to empirical reality in ways that philosophy and art are not. Paradigm shifts in physics can be adjudicated by experiment; paradigm shifts in philosophy cannot. This is the difference that matters, and it is precisely the difference Kuhn’s universality obscures.


Conclusion

The Sixth Sin, then, is the sin of false specificity. Kuhn presented his account as though it were about science. In reality, it was about the structure of all human thought. Everything he said about paradigms, normality, revolution, incommensurability, reinterpretation of the past — all applies equally, or more so, to philosophy, history, literature, art. By pretending otherwise, Kuhn enabled an assault on science from disciplines far less secure than those they attacked.

The truth is both more modest and more profound: science is not unique in having revolutions of thought. But it is unique in having external arbiters — data, experiment, nature itself — which eventually constrain its revolutions and ground its progress. Philosophy and the humanities have no such anchor. They float, eternally pre-paradigmatic, tossed by the winds of fashion. To criticise science for being paradigm-dependent while inhabiting those glass houses is an irony too rich to miss.

This is Kuhn’s Sixth Sin: to universalise what is common, to particularise what is banal, and in so doing to strip science of its specificity and to arm its most ill-founded critics.

 

Sin VI: Shooting the Messenger – The Hypocrisy of Applying Kuhn’s Schema to Science but Not to the Humanities Themselves


1. The Cultural Moment of SSR

When The Structure of Scientific Revolutions appeared in 1962, its impact was seismic not because it told scientists something they did not know, but because it told the rest of the academy — especially the humanities — what they wanted to hear. Mid-twentieth-century culture had draped science with an aura of inevitability: atomic power, antibiotics, space travel, and the dream of technological progress. Science was widely seen, in the public imagination, as the guarantor of human well-being and the epitome of rationality.

It is critical to note: this was as much a cultural projection as it was a scientific claim. Scientists themselves were often far more circumspect. The physicist Niels Bohr remarked in 1927 that “prediction is very difficult, especially about the future.” And yet in the pages of Life magazine, in the speeches of politicians, in the novels of Arthur C. Clarke, science was depicted as near-omniscient.

Kuhn’s book rode into this climate with a subversive message: science was not the steady march of cumulative progress, but a patchwork of communities, each caught in its own “paradigm,” prone to crisis, and given to revolutions that owed as much to sociological factors as to logic or evidence. Small wonder the humanities embraced it. Kuhn’s narrative gave them permission — indeed ammunition — to puncture the pedestal of science.


2. Scientists Are Human – But What of Science?

Kuhn devoted long passages to showing that scientists are human. They are stubborn, they resist new theories, they cling to familiar frameworks. In SSR, he wrote:

“In science… novelty emerges only with difficulty, manifested by resistance, against a background provided by expectation. Initially only the anticipated and usual are experienced even under circumstances where anomaly is later to be observed.” (SSR, p. 64)

And again:

“The transfer of allegiance from paradigm to paradigm is a conversion experience that cannot be forced.” (SSR, p. 151)

True enough. Scientists resist novelty. They protect the familiar. They change paradigms slowly, not instantly. But what does that prove about Science? Here we must distinguish between scientists — the flawed, human practitioners — and Science as a cumulative method and corpus of results.

This is where Kuhn’s critics have long noted a kind of category error. To point out that scientists are fallible is no revelation. One might as well point out that chess players get drunk, politicians lie, or poets commit adultery. The crucial issue is not their humanity, but whether the game of chess is still played well, whether democracy still functions, whether poetry still moves. Science, like chess, is a system whose quality cannot be reduced to the private foibles of its participants.

Your analogy of the chess master captures it perfectly: a chess grandmaster may be a drunk, a philanderer, or a misanthrope. Yet when he sits at the board, the quality of his play is measured not by his private life but by his ability to win. Likewise, the scientist may be petty or self-interested, but the scientific community’s results — vaccines, microchips, telescopes peering into galaxies — cannot be explained away by his character flaws.

Thus, when Kuhn and his followers harp on the humanity of scientists, they are in effect shooting the messenger.


3. The Projection Error

The irony grows sharper. For the very flaws Kuhn identifies in science — partisanship, tribal loyalty, slowness to change, dependence on community — are even more acute in the humanities. Philosophy, literary theory, sociology: these fields are eternally pre-paradigmatic by Kuhn’s own criteria. They have no consensus paradigms, no decisive experiments, no closure of debate. Yet it was precisely these disciplines that seized upon SSR as a cudgel to beat science.

Kuhn himself remarked:

“There are schools in the social sciences, but… the schools’ structure and behavior differ from those of the schools in mature science. The latter are produced by the acceptance of a paradigm; their existence is the very acknowledgment of scientific maturity. The schools among the social sciences instead derive from the persistent absence of a paradigm… The result is what I have called pre-paradigmatic science.” (SSR, p. 164–165)

This is devastating when turned back on the humanities themselves. Philosophy, history, and literary criticism have remained in precisely this condition for centuries. They lack consensus, lack decisive closure, and progress by rhetorical persuasion rather than empirical test. If Kuhn’s schema undermines science, it eviscerates philosophy.

Larry Laudan, one of Kuhn’s sharpest critics, put it bluntly in Progress and Its Problems (1977):

“If Kuhn’s relativism is true, it is even truer of those fields which lack empirical controls altogether. Philosophers who wield Kuhn against science saw off the very branch they sit on.”


4. The Irony of Scrutiny

Humanities scholars often defend this asymmetry with a rhetorical move: “Science claims more, therefore it deserves harsher critique.” But this collapses under examination. Science, in fact, claims less on the human level than almost any other intellectual tradition. It does not ask you to trust a prophet, or to venerate a text, or to swear fealty to an authority. It asks only: try it yourself. Look down the telescope. Run the experiment. Do the equations. Replicate the trial.

By contrast, try “checking” Heidegger or Derrida. What experiment can one run? What decisive test can confirm or falsify their claims? The philosopher’s text, unlike the scientist’s experiment, can never be independently verified. The reader must trust, interpret, or submit.

This is the final irony. Science, far from demanding obedience, insists upon skepticism. Its findings are public, testable, repeatable. Humanities, far from being more modest, rest upon authority, interpretation, and tradition. And yet it was the humanities, emboldened by Kuhn, who accused science of epistemic arrogance.


5. Secondary Scholarship on the “Kuhn Effect”

Ian Hacking observed in Introductory Essay to the Structure of Scientific Revolutions (Cambridge, 1982 edition):

“The Structure was read more avidly in English departments than in physics departments. It became a text for those who wanted to humble science by bringing it into the orbit of literature.”

Steve Fuller, in Thomas Kuhn: A Philosophical History for Our Times (2000), went further:

“Kuhn provided the rhetorical arsenal by which the humanities could resist the encroaching hegemony of science. That his book was seized upon outside science more than within it tells us where its true impact lay.”

This aligns with our argument: Kuhn’s lasting effect was not in changing science (which largely carried on unbothered), but in licensing the humanities to critique science from within glass houses.


6. The Messenger, Not the Message

Let us return to the core insight. SSR demonstrates, over a hundred pages, that scientists are human. They resist novelty, they cling to paradigms, they change slowly. True. But this is not news, nor is it special to science. It is true of philosophers, poets, and politicians alike. To highlight it in science alone is an act of projection — and of hypocrisy.

The more devastating rejoinder is this: Science works despite the humanity of scientists. Its results accumulate, its technologies function, its predictions are borne out. It does not ask for deference to scientists, only replication of their methods. It is the least authoritarian of intellectual traditions.

Thus, to use Kuhn to critique science is to shoot the messenger. You do not dethrone science by exposing scientists as human. You only reveal the futility of ignoring the message because you dislike the messenger.


7. Conclusion

Kuhn’s sixth sin is this hypocrisy: he offers the humanities a mirror in which they see science’s frailty, but fail to notice their own. They confuse the fallibility of scientists with the authority of science. They delight in dismantling a caricature of science while ignoring the deeper fact that science is uniquely self-correcting and public.

The tragedy of SSR’s reception is not that it humbled science, but that it emboldened those least entitled to throw stones. As the proverb goes: glass houses, stones, and motes in eyes.

Or, to adapt your own parting line: the scientist can always walk away, leaving his critic with the simple rejoinder — “Fine. Don’t take my word for it. Look for yourself.”
